I’ve never really been a Halloween girlie.
I don’t like trick or treating, and I do like candy corn. It was just never meant to be. What I do enjoy though, is when a Halloween costume is both creative, and tied to pop culture in some way vs a very scary, or store bought costume where if you went to a party, you’d see a bunch of other people wearing the same thing. Let’s examine the difference shall we?
Eric Andre as Sade: GOOD. It’s pop culture, it’s easily recognizable, and he looks great! I’d hit it.
Kylie Jenner as Demi Moore in Striptease: BAD. This is literally just a photoshoot that could exist on any other day of the year, and she didn’t even get the bangs right!
Perrie Edwards and her son as Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars in ‘Die With A Smile’ video. GOOD. Even though no real person is listening to this song, it’s huge, and it’s breaking records. Pop culture! Relevance! And somehow, her son manages to be the exact same size of Bruno Mars. It’s perfect.
Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber as The Simple Life. BAD. Yes this is relevant to pop culture, but it’s just recreating a photo! There’s nothing fun about this, and they will never be as iconic as the original women were. NEXT.
Now—Janelle Monae and Heidi Klum both went as ET for Halloween, but, Janelle made a huge mistake Tyra Banks would send them home for if they were on ANTM. They made ET a no-neck monster! That would never fly, and Heidi wins.
And one thing about a great costume? Is when everyone just GETS IT.
Conversely—great costumes (and for me, the winner of Halloween) happen when there is a layered meaning to them. Kerry Washington and her white boys as Zendaya and her white boys. Perfection. No notes. Love triangles are like energy, they never die, they simply change forms.
Perfection-no notes!!!!
