Let me just say this—I love Zendaya, in my fashion book, she can do no wrong—but this Challengers press tour, baby did everybody leave the fashion in the locker room??? Did it get banned for doping?
If you’ve been living under a rock, or in Ann Arbor Michigan (no offense) you mightn’t have heard that Zendaya (along with Josh O’Connor from God’s Own Country, and Mike Faist from West Side Story) is starring in a new film (no, not Dune III) called Challengers where she plays a tennis titan with two white boyfriends who possibly kiss (hashtag bi ally). I’m sure there’s more to the movie than that, but truly, that’s all you need to know, that—and the fashion for the press tour is a MESS!
Maybe I had high hopes for this press tour because:
I love tennis style (and butts, looking at you Rafa Nadal and Dominic Thiem)
Zendaya slays literally every single other press tour she’s EVER done! I mean the Dune II fashion was inSANE??? Every magazine cover, every pap shot—I mean she’s truly that girl!
So is it so wrong of me to want the excellence that was laid before me for the past few years???? Is that so wrong! No! But I simply have to wonder, what the HELL is going on in the house of commons!?!?!?
At the beginning of the tour, she debuted a new whispy blonde bob, which I’m absolutely all for—but then the dress (that did NOT fit well by the way) was so literal? And not cute? Like we get it, you’re in a tennis movie!
And I mean, sure, is her working out in said dress and heels extremely reminiscent of Mariah Carey working out in heels on MTV’s Cribs, YES! But still… we’re playing tennis and no one is serving!
MTV2, the queen that you were (or are? I haven’t watched MTV in like 15 years)
And for a moment, we got it back with this cute little Lacoste number. Sure it was basic, but they’re in Australia, and it was hot as hell, so I definitely thought it was fun, I liked the beat!
However, the boys really are dressing for a whole nother movie because what do you mean??? Mike Faist (L) is wearing the tan suit Obama got dragged for wearing, and Josh O’Connor (R) is dressed like a gay hustler in the 80s, or an extra in Al Pacino’s gay thriller Cruising! And now that I mention it—and I’m NOT complaining—but he always somewhere being gay! Every movie!
And thennnnnnnnn AFTER cutting the bob, she shows up with these extensions and this Taylor Swift dress from Lewy Vaton. Like I know she’s an ambassador, but there need to be rules, look how they massacred my girl!
I’d like to point out that Josh O’Connor is currently the ambassador for Loewe, and the brand’s creative director Jonathan Anderson is the one who also did the costumes for the filmé. I have pieces from Loewe. I love the brand. But baby what is happening? And the tennis ball heels? The 1920s flapper tennis skirt? You guys, I’m shaking, and it’s NOT another earthquake.
Somebody call the referee, I’m going back to the dugout! It’s halftime. Pray for me.
Unpopular opinion but I never been a fan of Law’s styling. I always felt like it leans towards… stunty and “provocative it gets the people going” but nobody says so bc we adore her. That’s how we end up with actual tennis balls.
I thought it was just me who was not feeling the looks so far. Dune 2 set the bar so high as well
