“Let women be horny on main!” rabid social media users typed furiously on the broken screens of their iPhones late Wednesday evening.
Earlier this week, pint-sized provocateur Sabrina Carpenter shook the headboard when she released the cover of her forthcoming album “Man’s Best Friend” which depicts the songstress on all fours at the feet of a faceless man, as he stands with a fistful of her hair. Carpenter is no stranger to horniness, nor to kink as she illustrates in one of my favourite songs of hers, Juno.
Not long after, the pop princess released additional artwork that depicts a gentleman of a certain age at the foot of her bed, seductively rubbing her ankles. But what does it mean? For some, it’s just a horny girl talking about getting it on, a woman in charge of her sexual power, that power being a submissive pup.
For others, it’s a curious display drenched in outdated tropes, and a slap in the face of feminism. Yet for others, it’s a tawdry look back at the era of “Smell the glove” — a glimpse into the future of women submitting (and appeasing) the fantasies of right wing men. So who’s right? Is anyone right? Or is it the nature of art to get people talking? But also, do some people need to shut up? I’d like to hear your thoughts.
For a woman who has never had a confusing message… I am very confused by the visuals. The first one doesn’t scream empowerment to me the way literally everything else she does. (it makes me think of Terry Richardson? Which doesn’t make sense either because I believe fully that Sabrina has artistic control and isn’t taking direction from a studio on shoots like this.)
My 13-year-old says it’s very obvious Sabrina is saying dogs are man’s best friend because men care about how they treat their dogs.
My husband says it’s totally obvious she’s making a reference to spinal tap, but from what I gather, the spinal tap cover was a black mirror? But I haven’t seen the movie yet so it’s possible I’m missing a reference.
What I’m trying to say for a woman who is exceptionally straightforward, right now I’m confused that I am confused!
There are ALWAYS some people who need to shut up, but those people will never be you, thank you as always for this contribution to modern thought. I really don't like the vinyl image what is going ON there like, that does not seem sexy to me, is that sexy to anyone? The perspective is so odd.
