This morning—way too early if we’re being honest, the rooster hadn’t even cock-a-doodle doo’d yet!!! I still had crust in my eyes—the nominations for the 96th annual Academy Awards were released and let’s just say, there were some surprises—for y’all, not for me, I be knowin!
It’s the way this tweet could be about so many women—anyway, let’s discuss!
The nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay were no surprise to me, despite so much protestation from dumb-dumbs that Barbie shouldn’t have been in the Adapted Screenplay category even though it’s existing IP and Miss Girl has a million jobs and storylines.
Do I think this is going to be a real contest? Not really. It’s Oppenheimer’s trophy to lose, although Poor Things or American Fiction could be surprise winners if the voters decide they like black people or women, spoiler alert: they don’t.
Original Screenplay is a lot more of a toss-up. Everyone here has a rightful place here except one of these films. I hated it so much, and I would say I don’t understand how it got here, but I know the academy loves films about old white men, so…
Get a head start on Valentine’s Day and put your heart in the right place by taking 20% off for a year subscription! Besides, like PBS, this newsletter is made possible in part by readers like you sweetie!!! You and Emma Stone’s 42” weave and puffy sleeves.
A looooooooot of people are surprised there is no nomination for Charles Melton here, but am I surprised? No. Why? Cause I told y’all I be knowin!!! I personally don’t think May December was a good film, or that his performance knocked my socks off, but it IS the best acting I’ve ever seen from him. So there’s that. Also, Ryan Gosling and Sterling K Brown noms, the academy said let’s hear it for hot, funny men with abs!
Nyad is this year’s To Leslie because literally who saw that movie? Name one person! I’ll wait! I’m happy The Color Purple is receiving some shine even though I don’t think the adaptation was good or that it should have even been made in the first place because it didn’t add anything to the legacy, but that’s a conversation for another time!
The name on everyone’s lips regarding Best Actor should only be Cillian Murphy, but again, the academy loves movies about old white men so Paul Giamatti may have his foot in the door. I hated The Holdovers! It’s Dead Poets Society for losers! I don’t care! I will say, no Leo DiCaprio nom? THE ACADEMY HATES HIM!!! They said we gave you a trophy you didn’t deserve already big head!!!
This category is going to be the trickiest I think. Carey Mulligan was great (as always—she’s never not great), Emma Stone was amazing, Sandra Hüller was a revelation, Annette Bening…. Lily Gladstone was really good—ultimately I’m rooting for Stone or Hüller. Also, Margot Robbie not being nominated for Barbie despite her co-stars being nominated in supporting roles? Baby I am NOT surprised. I told y’all I be knowin!
The Greta Gerwig snub for Best Directing isn’t surprising. The Celine Song snub is. Justine Triet is the only woman director nominated, and—not to discount a woman’s accomplishments, but what’s the over/under they only nominated her because they misread and thought it said “Justin”???
Let me just say this—I am rooting for Oppenheimer. I think it’s a very stacked category and these ladies are beautiful but there’s only one film STILL in the running towards becoming the Academy’s Next Top Best Picture—and it’s Oppy. Bring in the sheets!
I will be dedicating a live chat here on March 10th, 2024 during the Oscars, so if you wanna hear me talk shit, I’ll see you then! Are you surprised by any snubs or noms?
I agree that the best actress category is STACKED. I do wish my girl Rosamund had made it for best supporting. I so enjoyed her...as I did Saltburn in general. But don’t tell Twitter
I hate you for saying "bring in the sheets" LOL!!!! I hate myself for hating that the academy is a bunch of Nolan fanboys because I am a Nolan fanboy and I am not even... a boy. My hypocrisy! And, what you said about Carey Mulligan, that works for Leo: he's always best in class. Why do they hate him? You don't have to give it to him, fine, but nominate the man. Not nominating him is just... inaccurate. Speaking of, when a movie makes a zillion dollars they always nominate the director James Cameron, but when it's Greta... (I don't even like Barbie. I mean I love the doll, I grew up in the 80s, but not the film). Mostly I'm excited for American Fiction, a feat of originality/subtlety/humor about a topic that everyone fails to approach with any of those things, for my imaginary boyfriend of many years Jeffrey Wright. PS: What does Paul Giamatti have on these voters? Is it a spell?
