One thing about me is that I love a romcom.
There is just something about watching two people fall in love (not like watching them from a window in a creepy way) who have to break up because of some innocuous situation/laughable miscommunication, and then find their way back to each other as a 1980s pop song plays in the background. SWWOOOONNN!
We learned about Nancy Meyers’ new film coming out with a budget of $130 million, and chile I can’t tell you WHAT she needs $130 million for because what is that going to do in a romcom? Where is the budget going? Anyway, that didn’t last long because Netflix is BROKE — so Meyers is shopping it around elsewhere, and good for her.
The question is, how do we get back to the days of yesteryear when a man could e-mail a woman, lie about who he is through an ongoing, distrustful correspondence, open a huge bookstore chain that rivals her generationally owned local bookshop, and puts her out of business only for them to meet in Gramercy Park and fall in love?! Tell me when?
Euphoria’s Sydney Sweeney and Everybody Wants Some!!’s Glen Powell were seen in behind the scenes photos and video of their new romcom — a romcom whose plot is completely under wraps — it wouldn’t surprise me if they’re just making it up as they go because it looks a mess. Do I think these people have chemistry? No. Do I think she’s a good actress? Also no. But am I a little bit desperate for love? Yes.
For now, I will live in the past and share with you 5 of my favourite RomComs:
Anything with Julia Roberts
(Notting Hill, My Best Friend’s Wedding, Pretty Woman, Sleeping with the Enemy) I mean she is the queen of romcoms and should be treated as such! Am I counting her new film Ticket To Paradise with George Clooney in this? Absolutely not. I’m not THAT desperate.
St. Elmo’s Fire
This film has EVERYTHING! A theme song that repeats multiple times throughout the film, the brat pack, cocaine! I mean what more can you ask for!
The Talented Mr. Ripley
I know you might be thinking Meech, this is NOT a romcom — and you’d be WRONG. If a man came all the way to Italy just to hang out with me and sing in Italian dive bars, was SO obsessed with me that he literally wanted to be me? Baby that’s LOVE. Sign me up.
Meet Joe Black
This is maybe what I would call a dark romance. It’s so beautiful and love is ever-present throughout the entire film. It’s so tender, and sweet, and you will absolutely come away feeling differently about love than you did before. Trigger Warning Brad Pitt at his hottest. Remember he’s a different person now!
Bachelorette
This is more a romcom but like, about friendship. It’s raunchy, it’s hilarious, it’s incredibly sweet. Kirsten Dunst, Lizzy Caplan, Isla Fisher — they’re all at their best.
Anyway, we need to bring the hot and sexiness back to romcoms because baby the good ones are few and FARRRRR between.
Thank you for subscribing to Now That I Mention It—and now that I mention it, thank you for being a friend.
I also love a rom-com and do think the genre was great during the 80s/90s. Anything with Meg Ryan I am a sucker for. In recent years, I did enjoy Set It Up (2018 film with Zoey Deutch & Glen Powell) and Love Hard (holiday movie with Nina Dobrev). But I agree, it's time to step it up with these movies.
I'm revealing my age here Meech as a list of best romcoms HAS to include 'Moonstruck' and 'Somethings Gotta Give'. xx
